AI answers vs Google rankings: what's different
Ranking on Google and being named by an AI assistant are related but not the same. What carries over for a Gibraltar business, and what does not.

Short answer
Google ranks many pages for a search; an AI assistant writes one answer and names a few businesses. Good SEO helps with both, since a site that is easy to crawl and clearly written is easier for assistants to read too, but assistants rely more on what other sites say about you and reward pages that answer specific questions directly.

How is an AI answer different from a Google search result?
| Google search results | AI assistant answer | |
|---|---|---|
| What you get | A ranked list of pages, plus maps and ads | A written answer naming a few businesses |
| How many businesses | Many, over several pages | Usually a handful |
| Where it comes from | Google's index of the web | Model memory, web search, or both |
| Stability | Fairly stable day to day | Can change between askings |
| What wins | Relevance, quality and links, per Google's own guidance | Not published by any of the companies |
What carries over from SEO?
- Crawlability. Pages that search engines can reach are pages assistants can reach, provided the AI crawlers are not blocked. Check yours.
- Clear pages. A good title, description and heading, and text in the HTML rather than drawn by JavaScript.
- Structured data. Your business details stated in a standard format.
- Google's own AI answers. Google AI Mode and AI Overviews are part of Google Search, so work that helps you on Google is more likely to help there too.
What doesn't carry over?
- Ranking position. Ranking first on Google does not mean an assistant will name you. Assistants read a handful of sources and summarise.
- Keyword targeting. People ask assistants whole questions. Pages that answer a specific question directly are easier to cite than pages built around a keyword.
- Your own site's weight. Assistants lean heavily on what directories, reviews and press say about you. See get described the same way everywhere.
Google also shows an AI Overview for only a minority of local searches, often showing a map of businesses instead; our methodology cites the published estimates. For local businesses, ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity are often where the AI answer actually happens.
Common questions
Should I stop doing SEO?
No. Google is still where much local search happens, and the basics of good SEO are also the basics of being readable by AI assistants. Add the AI-specific work on top.
Is AEO the same as GEO?
They are two names for the same idea: answer engine optimisation and generative engine optimisation both mean making a business easier for AI assistants to find, understand and cite. Our glossary defines both.
Does ranking on Google help me in ChatGPT?
It can, indirectly: a well-ranked, well-described site is more likely to be among the pages an assistant finds when it searches. It is not a guarantee, which is why measuring each assistant separately matters.
